Inspired by Fellowship

Friday, June 14

Today one of my best friends surprised me at work to bring me some beautiful flowers. Seeing her simple love for me and her thoughtfulness to brighten up my day, it reminded me of a time around seven months ago when I prayed for the Lord to bless me with honest, pure, true, intimate fellowship. I asked for friends who would love me, be accountable for me, and walk next to me in my life after Christ. I asked the Lord to give me loving friendships with Him at the center. Man, was I blown away. Until this season of my life, I never knew what real fellowship was; a gathering of believers who walk and live life together. I didn't understand the power of friends who pray for each other and intercede into each other's lives. I had no idea of the beauty of God's presence in a group of people who wanted to love Him and love each other.

Fellowship is not only beautiful, but it is necessary. The core of Jesus' life was centered around fellowship, his disciples. He ate with them, prayed with them, worshiped with them, and lived life with them. They knew each other's hearts and laughed with one another. God did not intend for us to be alone. He wants us to be alive with each other. What better way to experience the love, forgiveness, wisdom, joy, and peace of Christ than with others who are also seeking Him? From communion to a Friday night hang out, fellowship was intended for us to be alive.

I've experienced friendships that were empty. In fact, I think we've all experienced those; friendships that revolved around each other and not Him. Friendships that fell apart because the lack of love, grace, and honesty. Friendships fail because of our lack of selflessness. I've had friends that wouldn't know the first thing I was struggling with; they wouldn't know my prayers to the Lord. At one point I was empty of fellowship, and the sting was evident. But He provided. Right now God continues to grow these friendships that I've made with other believers. These friends that I spend evenings and mornings with, friends that I laugh and eat with, friends that I encounter God with, friends that I cry and pray in front of, friends that are honest with me and don't allow my flesh to miss out on the goodness of God. Do you have friends like this? Not one, but a group of believers know each other's hearts? Do you have this? Do you know the beauty of it?

"And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved." -Acts 2:44-47

  1. I have a few of those friends and I'm praying for more. How sweet it is to have Christ centered relationships!

  2. I love this post! I'm right where you are. This time last year I didn't have any friendships like this, but I was praying always for someone to come my way. The Lord has blessed me with a few wonderful ladies that He knew I needed... He will always honor our prayers when they follow after His heart for us!
